In order to defeat depression, you must first understand what depression is, and what it is not. In other words, you must understand the true nature of it.

It begins by understanding that depression is not a thing. You can scour the world around you, and you will never find depression lurking in some dark cave. You won’t find it slithering around at the bottom of the sea, nor will you find it waiting to pounce out at you from behind a dumpster in a dark alleyway. You can also survey your entire body. You won’t find a cell, a growth, a gene or a virus anywhere in the human body that can be identified as depression. No, depression is not a thing. Depression is a state.

Depression is an energetic state. Specifically, it is a very low energetic state. Having said that, depression is not energy in and of itself. Depression is merely a state that can result when energy runs low. Think of depression similar to darkness or cold. There is no such thing as darkness, only an absence of light. There is no such thing as cold, only an absence of heat. Likewise, there is no such thing as depression, but only an absence of energy.

The realization that there is truly no such thing as depression should be a bit of a flashbulb moment, especially for those who take medication in hopes of defeating it. If you are suffering from depression, there is no physical object called depression anywhere inside of you. There is nothing in your body that needs to be eliminated, removed, suppressed or destroyed. The fact that there is no such thing as depression is the very reason why medications will not cure it. There is nothing there to cure! The path towards defeating depression is not through getting rid of something within you. To the contrary, it is through increasing something within you.

What is it inside of you that needs to be increased in order to defeat depression? It is your energy, plain and simple! The more energetic you feel, the less depressed you will be.

Close your eyes and imagine a river running at full strength within you. When this imaginary river is running unimpeded, you feel strong, vibrant, healthy and capable. Now, with your eyes still closed, imagine a few obstructions beginning to form in the river’s path. Imagine a logjam here, a sandbar there, and an outcropping of boulders a little further along. In your mind’s eye, see how these barriers affect the flow of the river. Take note of how they impair its strength and staunch its force. If you felt energetic and powerful when the river was running at full flow, how do you feel now that its force has weakened? You know the answer, don’t you? You feel weak, tired, sick and powerless. In other words, you feel depressed.

You can open your eyes now. What you just imagined is actually pretty close to what truly happens inside of you that brings about the state of depression. You have a figurative river running through you that is the energy of life. When that energy flows through you unabated, you possess strength, wellbeing, joy, clarity, lightness and the ability to heal. On the other hand, when you are low on life energy you feel weak, sick, miserable, confused, heavy and hopeless. And when you feel that way for long enough, the state of depression sets in. So, the cause of depression is not a disease or an illness running rampant within you – it is merely an insufficient flow of life energy.

This should come as good news for those who struggle with depression. Why? Because in order for you to put depression behind, you do not need pills. You do not need to be institutionalized. You do not need a lobotomy, electroconvulsive therapy or any other kind of intrusive or radical procedure. What you need, plain and simple, is life energy. You need to identify the things you do, say and think that make you feel good, and you need to fan those flames. Remember, there is no such thing as depression, only an absence of energy. What you need is energy!
